Federal government sees uptick in disability hiring

Report asserts employment uptick

A new report from the U.S. Office of Personnel Management found that the federal government hired 18,738 people with disabilities in fiscal year 2011, or 14.7 percent of all new hires.

The total represents a significant step toward meeting President Barack Obama’s goal of hiring 100,000 more people with disabilities by 2015. The goal was announced in a July 2010 executive order from the president.

“To implement Executive Order 13548, OPM has been working with partner agencies to implement and improve efforts to employ workers with disabilities though increased recruitment, hiring and retention,” the report stated. “OPM has identified these efforts as a key component of human resource strategies, and has required agencies to adopt an integrated approach involving their Human Resource, Equal Employment Opportunity, and Diversity and Inclusion offices. Agencies are expected to implement practices within their agencies that promote diversity and inclusion for all employees.”

The increase was an improvement from fiscal year 2010, when people with disabilities represented 10.3 percent of new hires by the federal government.

In total more than 200,000 people with disabilities work for the federal government, the nation’s largest employer.
